BRICS+ Legal Forum Delegates Visit Supreme Court, Hold Bilateral Consultations Before Inauguration
Senior legal delegations participating in the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum held bilateral meetings at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Friday, ahead of the formal inauguration of the Forum on August 22.
The bilateral consultations, hosted by the Bar Association of India (BAI), brought together representatives of participating BRICS+ jurisdictions for discussions on strengthening cooperation among legal institutions, bar associations and the wider legal profession. The Indian delegation was led by BAI President Mr. Prashant Kumar and President-Elect Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok, along with other office-bearers of the Association.
The discussions focused on strengthening legal cooperation across BRICS+ jurisdictions and exploring areas of mutual engagement, including institutional capacity building, cross-border dispute resolution, legal education and emerging regulatory challenges. The Forum's programme is structured around economic resilience and the rule of law, climate finance and developmental justice, legal education, arbitration, artificial intelligence governance, digital trust and international investment law.
A 60-member international delegation from the BRICS+ Legal Forum also visited the Supreme Court of India on Friday. The delegates visited the National Judicial Museum and Archive, the War Room and the Court complex, followed by an interaction with Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant.
The 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum will be inaugurated on August 22 at the India Habitat Centre, with Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant as the Chief Guest. The inaugural plenary will focus on “Rule of Law in a Multipolar World: Building Legal Capacity for Economic Resilience” and will also feature an address by Attorney General for India Mr. R. Venkataramani.
Hosted by the Bar Association of India, the Forum is being held under the theme “Rule of Law Frameworks and Institutional Capacity Building for Economic Resilience, Innovation and Sustainability.” The programme seeks to move beyond broad dialogue towards practical legal and institutional frameworks for cooperation across BRICS+ jurisdictions.
The substantive programme includes sessions on economic resilience and the rule of law, climate finance and developmental justice, legal education and institutional capacity building, the proposed BRICS Arbitration Network (BRICSAN), AI governance and digital trust, and international investment treaty arbitration. The closing plenary is scheduled to consider the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum Declaration, constitute working groups emerging from the deliberations and set the mandate for the 12th Forum.
The bilateral consultations and the Supreme Court visit mark the opening phase of the 11th BRICS+ Legal Forum, with the formal deliberations set to begin on Saturday in New Delhi.
