Supreme Court judge, Justice Dipankar Datta, on Thursday, recused himself from hearing the bail applications of Bhima Koregaon case accused Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira. The petitions filed against the Bombay High Court's refusal to grant them bail were listed before a Division Bench of Justices Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta. As soon as the matter was taken, Justice Datta announced that he was recusing.
Senior Counsel Rebecca John, who represented Gonsalves, urged the top court to list the matter urgently. The bench agreed to list the matter on Monday, January 16.
The order stated, "List on 16.01.2023, before a Bench of which Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipankar Datta is not a member".
The petitioners have been under custody since August 28, 2018 after they were arrested over alleged Maoist links in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence of January 2018.
