The Secretariat of the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana received a communication today(August 3) at 9.30 PM from the Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju requesting him to recommend the name of his successor, confirmed sources in the CJI's office.
CJI Ramana is retiring with effect from August 26, 2022. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is the second senior judge of the Supreme Court, and is in line to be the next Chief Justice of India as per convention.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure for the appointment of the Chief Justice of India, the Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs would, at the "appropriate time", seek the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India.
Although no specific timeline, as per practice, the Ministry seeks the outgoing CJI's recommendation a month before the retirement.
